What are Domain Names?

A domain name is essentially a signpost on the Internet. Every website you've ever been to, and every email you've ever composed, has used a domain name in its address. People register domain names in order to 'stake a claim' to a particular name -- whether for business or personal reasons. Once a domain name is registered to a person or company, it is that person's to use exclusively as long as they continue to pay the yearly renewal fee.

A Domain Name is a textual version of an IP address, the number that points to a particular Web site. Each domain on the internet consists of numbers, but it would be very confusing if you had to remember such long combinations of numbers. For example, the number 70.84.92.41 is the IP-address for talkingcity.com.

Without domain names each and every Web site would have to be recalled by a number like this, similar to the telephone system, but much more difficult to remember! For this reasons domain names were introduced, and have made navigation on the net much simpler!
